Remember Yik Oi Huang
(pronounced Yick Oy Hu-ong)
Story of Asians Belong's Founder, Sasanna Yee, who turned personal crisis into peace advocacy. On January 8th 2019, Sasanna's Popo (Maternal Grandmother) went for her exercise at Visitacion Valley Playground across from her home in San Francisco. A teen bludgeoned Yik Oi, inflicting severe damage, and left her for dead. After a year of fighting for her life, she left us on January 3rd 2020.
Yik Oi means "Abundant Love" and may Grandmother's blessings be with you. She was courageous and benevolent and her story is one of hope and resilience. We carry Yik Oi's legacy by fostering belonging, love, unity and respect.
Transformational Community Projects

Creating a culture of safety and healing...
through renaming Visitacion Valley Playground as Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park. We restore Peace to the South East corner of San Francisco by reinvesting in this underserved, diverse, working class, immigrant community. We uplift Yik Oi's story as a US Citizen and the quiet but impactful contributions she made to this country.
We envision a sacred place for all to experience Mother Nature and culture together. Let's LOVE UP VIS VALLEY!

Creating a culture of kinship and belonging...
through the collaborative exchange of stories, resources, ideas, food, arts, movement. There are a multitude of Asian cultures that make up the fabric of the US and the world population. Alongside everyone else, our contributions and history are worthy of acknowledgment. And when communities come together as one, magic happens and dreams come true.
We envision various "Asians Belong" chapters that promote empowerment, inclusivity and visibility of the Asian Diaspora.

Creating a culture of reciprocity and gratitude
The connections we develop both face-to-face and online are what make the work we do meaningful and worthwhile. We are beyond grateful for our many supporters who came to events, shared our posts, volunteered their time, money and expertise to uphold our collective liberation. By getting a shirt, you will also be giving back!
